'Georgie Gilmore', Photography by Gillian Clarkson.

MEET THE MAKER

Georgie Gilmore inherited many of her interests and skills from her ancestors who were artists, sculptors and musicians from the West of Ireland.

After studying History of Art with a focus on Indian temple art, myth and sculpture, she travelled extensively in India to sacred sites representing 'the Goddess in her divine and maligned forms'. On her return, she worked for many years as a Curator with the World Art Collection at The Royal Pavilion and Museums, Brighton. During those years she sang and played guitar in bands by night, and, developed her artist/maker skills by taking classes and courses in; basic mechanics, clay sculpture, stained glass, silversmithing and wooden spoon carving.

In 2008 Georgie lived and worked in New Zealand, where under the tutelage of Chris Bones, an expert carver, she designed and carved her first pendants. On returning to the UK, she studied Carpentry and Joinery at Brighton MET, qualifying with a Distinction. Georgie gained experience at a Joiner-friend's workshop and volunteered to help build a timber framed house for The National Trust in Haselmere,

Her hands became busier than ever when she became a mother twice over, to two magnificent sons. The great task of motherhood lead her to find the support of women's circles in Lewes. She attended a deep dive course into Mindfulness and Menstruation, which forever altered and validated her experience of being a cyclical woman in this modern world. She brings this practice into her daily life and work.

Georgie still loves to sing and play guitar.

All of these life experiences and influences inform her woodwork, which continues to evolve from all of these great roots.
